Tissington Hall
Tissington Hall has been home to the FitzHerbert family for over 400 years. The hall was built in 1609 by Francis FitzHerbert to replace the moated fortification that guarded the Norman Church of St Mary’s that straddles the hill in the centre of the village.
Tissington is one of the prettiest villages in Derbyshire situated just north of the market town of Ashbourne. With its annual Well-Dressings Week as its lead attraction many visitors come to the village not only to enjoy the countryside but also to sample the country’s’ heritage.
The building itself houses the Main Hall, the Library and two State Drawing-Rooms on the first floor. Since it was built, various members of the FitzHerbert family have added to the Hall over the centuries including the addition on the West Front by Joseph Pickford of Derby in the late eighteenth century and also, around 1900, of the library wing by the eminent architect Arnold Mitchell. The Library boasts a collection of over 3,000 books which have been collated by the family over the centuries.
Sir Richard FitzHerbert inherited the Hall and estate in 1989. He lives there with his wife Fiona and it is a home to the four children, five dogs, two cats and a plethora of other animals.
